MISCELLANEOUS TIPS
Calculating timber section for floor joists   A rough but useful rule of thumb for calculating the depth of timber needed for floor joists in inches: SPAN (in feet) divided by 2, + 2.

Example:. For a joist span of 12 feet: (12/2) +2 = 8 inches.

Kilowatt /BThU conversion   In France most heating appliances are specified in Kilowatts rather than BThU (British Thermal Units). For conversion purposes 1 kilowatt = 3412 BThU
Alternative woodworm killer   For those who are worried about any long term affects of using Xylophene products on large amounts of timber in the house, a local alternative is Ammonia. It does kill woodworm already present but I don't know how effective it is long term.

Alternative to the portapotty

Love them or hate them, they're a part of renovation life, but why shell out £60 or so when a much more practical alternative can be made for pence. (And no arguing over who has to empty it!) Click on the icon for details of this idea supplied by Nathan and Tammy.
