TIPS AND TRICKS

Before you delve into our practical tips and tricks, here are our top ten most important tips for a happy life in France:

* Introduce yourself to your local Mayor at the earliest opportunity - it's vital you have his support.
* Be honest and relaxed in your dealings with authority otherwise forget getting anything done.
* Don't bring "baggage" with you - when in France do as the French do.
* Don't isolate yourself - make a genuine effort to become a real member of your community.
* NEVER, NEVER, NEVER take a builder on trust, and NEVER pay large sums of money in advance.
* Don't be the French equivalent of a "whinging pom" - otherwise why bother to come here?
* Be flexible and don't upset your neighbours - one day you'll need them.
* Don't be critical of local customs and lifestyle, we aren't here to reproduce Britain.
* Learn to speak French - if nothing else it's only common courtesy and the French appreciate the effort.
* Learn to love Pastis and remember 6pm is always aperitif time - forget doing anything else.
* Finally - relax and enjoy every day, there are no "trial runs" in life, we only pass this way once!
