The
Farmhouse Table
|
After
eating off a table fashioned from an old oak door for three
years, January this year decreed that it was time to manufacture
something more fitting. That, and spilling countless glasses
of wine because of the old door studs that poked up through
the tablecloth! There comes a time when the pain of losing
precious nectar overcomes the pain of working out in the cold
barn.
A friend from England prepared some planed American Oak floorboarding
for me to make the manufacture of the top relatively easy
to fillet together. After all this time I still have problems
finding good seasoned oak in the region - despite being surrounded
by the stuff!

The legs and stretchers etc. were manufactured in oak from
Lapeyre. (They do sell a small range of oak sections for use
as decorative beams etc) The legs and stretchers were routed
to give a more rounded appearance and the whole lot dowelled
together. Final finishing started with spraying the wood with
water to raise the grain, sanding down and then applying the
medium oak stain. (This way the grain doesn't rise again when
applying the water based stain) A gloss varnish was applied
and cut back with 000 wire wool to give a matt appearance
- this gives a much better finish than ready made matt varnishes.
Finally the whole piece was waxed and buffed. Sounds easy
when you say it quickly - actually the whole process took
a couple of weeks. Total cost was around £200 - somewhat
less than the £900+ you could expect to pay! |
