THE
SECOND COTTAGE - The first floor
The
floor cutout for the new staircase from the ground to
first floor. (This work was carried out prior to work
starting on the attic to facilitate the transport of
materials) The two oak uprights holding the attic main
beam were replaced with three more substantial pieces.
We needed two bedrooms and a bathroom on this floor
so the whole area was stud partitioned to provide this.
As usual our plans were thrown away and the chalk came
into its own again. The bathroom was positioned above
the kitchen - once again choosing the optimum route
for the waste pipe. As before, our planning revolved
around the position of the WC!

The almost - finished hallway. The old beam was retained,
although it has no useful purpose other than decorative.
The only thing left to go into place was the balustrade.
The floor was washed thoroughly, then treated with Brou
de Noix and a final couple of coats of flooring grade
satin acrylic varnish. We kept the original wall finish,
just repairing and applying more limewash with a final
coat of matt emulsion. To the left of the photograph
you can just see the shelf which finished off the top
of the new interior wall downstairs (more of that later).

Final
finishing in one of the two bedrooms built around the
staircase from the first floor to the attic. When I
get some better photographs of the bathroom and other
bedroom then I'll post them here.
