THE
FARMHOUSE - Study
|
|
The
other side of the first floor of the farmhouse was somewhat
difficult to plan. Again the only way to access the
bathroom and the attic bedroom /study was through what
had been another bedroom. Any corridor in this area
would have no natural light so the room was changed
into a first floor study and hobbies room which could
double up as an additional bedroom. Although not yet
finished on these photo's, the change to a bedroom will
be achieved by open shelving between the walkway and
the room (forming the corridor but allowing light through)
with blinds which can be dropped to section off the
room.

Part
of the floor had to be removed to allow for the removal
of the front floor beam which was fouling the kitchen
window on the ground floor. New joist work was installed
to allow free movement of the window. Unfortunately
the original floor was not flat but had a distinct droop
in the middle. Thus the new joist work had to take account
of this - just one more unforeseen problem to overcome!

Blinds
will also be fitted to the beam in this section of the
room to seal it off for bedroom use. The japanese staircase
which has access to the attic bedroom, can just be seen
on the left. The upright piece of oak was introduced
onto the wall to add more character to what was originally
a room without much character. It also allowed us to
mix exposed stonework and keep the clean plaster lines
for the bedroom area.
