EXTERIOR - Part 1

The rear of the farmhouse was relatively uninspiring. Early in the first year we had cleaned it up somewhat and uncovered the well, which is very close to the farmhouse. The rear of the farmhouse was about 1 metre below the ground level and was causing some damp problems. We needed to excavate this area to replace the window with a rear door.
Enter the excavator! This turned out to be one of those occasions when you need your neighbours. The winter had been quite wet, and once we had excavated the area beside the farmhouse wall it rapidly began to fill with water, and was getting dangerously close to floor level. Fortunately Regis and Jean Bernard (the son of our local farmer) were passing at the time, saw what was happening, and immediately drove off to bring an agricultural pump. Regis chipped in with some spare drainage pipe he had and, together, ,they saved the day. It gave us time to connect the drainage system from the rear of the farmhouse around to the existing underground drain which ran under the garden and down to the forest.
My first attempt at dry stone walling. This is the first stage in the terracing - which is the basic layout planned for the rear garden. Now that it is all laid to grass then we can start on planning the new layout. Much more to come in 2003!
One year on and the whole area is beginning to mature - we even have decent grass again! Later this year will see the rear wall re-mortared and next spring we'll start work on the outside dining area and barbecue. Keep tuning in for updates!
