Enter
the excavator! This turned out to be one of those occasions
when you need your neighbours. The winter had been quite
wet, and once we had excavated the area beside the farmhouse
wall it rapidly began to fill with water, and was getting
dangerously close to floor level. Fortunately Regis
and Jean Bernard (the son of our local farmer) were
passing at the time, saw what was happening, and immediately
drove off to bring an agricultural pump. Regis chipped
in with some spare drainage pipe he had and, together,
,they saved the day. It gave us time to connect the
drainage system from the rear of the farmhouse around
to the existing underground drain which ran under the
garden and down to the forest.
